One of the central themes of Tides of Legacy is family, not just the one we’re born into, but the one we choose, nurture, and build over time. Colton and Elijah’s adoption of Kai is one of my favorite storylines because it captures the beauty of belonging.
Family, after all, is not confined to bloodlines. It’s defined by love, trust, and the promise to stand by each other through triumphs and trials. Kai’s journey, from loss and uncertainty to finding a home in the palace, reflects the truth that family is about showing up, listening, and loving unconditionally.
I wanted readers to see that family can be both fragile and powerful. Fragile, because it requires care, patience, and forgiveness. Powerful, because when rooted in love, it gives us the courage to face the most brutal storms.
In my own life, I’ve seen how chosen families, friends who become like siblings, mentors who become like parents, and children who become like ours through love—shape who we are. My hope is that Kai’s story reminds us all that family is not limited to biology. It’s the people who make us feel safe, seen, and cherished.
